You type your service and your town into Google Maps — and your business is nowhere. It’s one of the most common questions we hear. The good news: the cause is usually one of a short list, and most are fixable in a day.
1. Your profile isn’t verified
An unverified Google Business Profile barely shows up. Open your profile at business.google.com — if it says “Get verified”, start there. Verification can be by video, phone or postcard.
2. Your primary category is too vague
Google matches searches to your primary category first. “Restaurant” loses to “Italian restaurant”. “Clinic” loses to “Dermatologist”. Pick the most specific option that is true, then add secondary categories for your other services.
3. You’re searching from too far away
Map results depend on where the searcher is. If you search from home, 8 km away, you’ll see different results than a customer next door. Test from near your business — or use a ranking grid, like the one in our free audit.
4. Your business name, address or phone don’t match elsewhere
If your address is written three different ways across your website, Facebook and directories, Google trusts it less. Make your name, address and phone identical everywhere.
5. Your hours are missing or wrong
Searches with “open now” hide businesses without hours. Add your regular hours and special hours for holidays.
6. You have few or no recent reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest signals for Maps. A competitor with 140 recent reviews will usually beat one with 12 old ones. See our guide on getting more Google reviews.
7. Your website doesn’t mention what you do — or where
Google reads your website to understand your services and area. A homepage that says “Welcome!” and nothing else doesn’t help. Each main service deserves its own page that mentions your city.
8. Your profile was suspended or flagged
Keyword-stuffed names (“Best Dentist Berlin Cheap”) or a virtual office address can get a profile suspended. Use your real business name and a real address customers can visit.
9. Competitors are using spammy tactics
Sometimes the businesses above you break the rules — fake names, fake listings. You can suggest edits on Maps, or report serious cases through Google’s Business Redressal form.
What to do next
Start with numbers 1, 2 and 5 — they take minutes. Then work on reviews and your website over the coming weeks.
Not sure which of these applies to you? Run the free audit — it checks most of them in about 30 seconds.
