Reviews do two jobs at once: they help you rank on Google Maps, and they convince people to choose you. Most businesses don’t lack happy customers — they lack a routine for asking.
Ask at the right moment
The best time to ask is right after a good experience: when a patient thanks you, when a guest says the food was great, when a client receives their keys. Gratitude fades fast.
Make it one tap
Every extra step loses reviews. Create your short review link in Google Business Profile (“Ask for reviews”) and put it:
- on a QR code or NFC card at the counter or reception
- in your follow-up message (WhatsApp, SMS or email)
- on receipts, invoices and your email signature
Use simple, personal words
“Would you mind sharing your experience on Google? It really helps small businesses like ours.” That’s enough. Ask in the customer’s language — people write longer, warmer reviews in their own language.
Ask everyone — not only the happy ones
Filtering who you ask (“review gating”) is against Google’s rules. Ask all customers. The occasional critical review makes your profile look real.
Never offer rewards
Discounts, gifts or prize draws for reviews break Google’s policies and, in many countries, consumer law. The same goes for buying reviews or asking staff and family to post them.
Reply to every review
Thank people by name for positive reviews. For negative ones, stay calm, apologise for the experience, and invite them to contact you directly. Future customers read your replies as much as the reviews.
Healthcare tip: never confirm that someone is a patient in a public reply.
Make it a weekly habit
Set a small target — for example, five new reviews a week — and check it every Friday. Steady beats bursts: ten reviews every month look more natural than fifty in one week and nothing after.
